“We came across an advert for Nightingale Shepherd Huts while we were thinking about buying one from a competitor. As the show hut was quite nearby we drove over to look at it. We were delighted by the charming way in which Carsten had used recycled materials in the construction of the hut, especially in fittings and, for example the block planes supporting the window cill or the stained glass windows. This gave the hut an individuality from the outset. The show hut was on the market so, with some minor changes to the fittings to make it more suited to a home office, it was ideal for our needs. Even in these modifications, Carsten was careful to use recycled materials – Victorian floor boards for the desktop and shelves, and some charming antique brass handles for the drawers.”

Robin Hut has exceeded our expectations in so many ways

“We spent many months thinking about how we could extend our house to get the spare bedroom and office space that we really needed. Then we found the website for Nightingale Shepherd Huts and this looked like a good option for us. From the first time we met Carsten we felt confident that he would deliver something special for us, he was bursting with enthusiasm and ideas. We really felt that Carsten took the time to find out about us and our lifestyle and this influenced the design for the project.

He listened to our own ideas, incorporating them in ingenious clever ways which were far beyond our own imaginations.

The build itself was incredible Carsten is by far the hardest worker we have met, he works quickly, efficiently and without any fuss or stress. All of the other people involved in the build were also reliable, efficient, polite and unobtrusive. Having a build in the garden really does mean that there is no mess or stress in your house! Carsten kept us updated at all stages and worked completely to the timetable agreed. He was always available for a catch up or to share ideas. His enthusiasm was infectious throughout.

Robin Hut has exceeded our expectations in so many ways, we feel so lucky as we know we have a truly beautiful and unique space which is a joy to spend time in. There are so many things we love about the hut but here are a few of the extra special things which make this space so amazing;
The stunning windowsill made from a piece of Brighton pier held up with some old wood planers, the secret box shelf next to the bed – perfect for a morning coffee, the gorgeous reclaimed slate tiles that surround the wood burner, the incredible beam that runs the length of the cabin with the most gorgeous jigsaw joint, the clever light fittings made from old jelly moulds and a gas canister, the stunning reclaimed stained class windows.

The wood burner provides so much warmth and with the extensive insulation the hut is usable all year round, we had guests over Christmas who were warm and cosy despite the temperature dropping below zero overnight. I love working in the hut, it’s so peaceful and quiet and is always cosy. It’s great for staying calm and providing inspiration. If you are thinking of using Carsten for a project I would encourage you to go for it, he was an absolute pleasure to work with and we are so pleased with the end result.”
